Carla Bley - 1964
Paul Bley recorded ‘Ida Lupino’ for his classic 1966 album “Closer”. It’s a good example of “Open Form” Jazz that sets up a rhythmic bass riff forming a “bass camp” for improvisation (Link).
‘Ida Lupino’ has a very simple V-I “Open Structure” form. The meditative drone rhythm supports a beautiful melody. The simplicity makes it ideal for moving between the chords as the lead players dictate in their improv forcing everyone to listen carefully.
Looking at this transcription, it immediately becomes obvious that it is unplayable as written (unless you have massive hands). Look at the transcription as a “sound goal” and do what you can to achieve the sound. Try playing the ‘c’ of the repeated drone with your right hand, including it whenever you can.
