Bud Powell - 1949

Bud Powell introduced the next generation of piano players to some important chord voicing solutions. His most influential albums are the the two ‘Amazing Bud Powell’ albums on Blue Note. ‘Bouncing With Bud’ is one of the songs from those albums.

Under the hood:

The techniques seen here have been adopted by countless players that followed:

(1) Skeletal (shell) chord voicings built on the root and fifth or the root, third and fifth.  

(2) The rhythmic placement of chords driving to the next bar (bar 7 to 8 and 8 to 9)

(3) The “locked hand” technique used extensively by George Shearing (bars 22 through 26).
