Hank Mobley - 1960
Saxophonist Hank Mobley recorded over 100 of his own compositions during his tragically short career. Straightforward, cool, soulful and bluesy his playing always seems “right”. Students looking for a good foundation for their playing would do well starting here. ‘Dig Dis’ is from the 1960’s album ‘Soul Station’. Wynton Kelly’s 24 bar introduction is also worth close scrutiny.
For the most part, the music speaks for itself here. Play close attention to Kelly’s relaxed yet precise note placement in the intro and Mobley’s first 12 bar improv on the changes.
