Hank Mobley - 1960

Another catchy tune from Hank Mobley’s ‘Soul Station’.

‘This I Dig of You’ has a 16 bar structure. The first 8 drives tension to the second 8 in two ways:
(1) A pedal point V (f) on the third beat of the bar. So it goes I – tension – II – tension… (2) Each repetition is a higher inversion of the chords.

The second 8 is set up with a little temporary II -V – I emphasized with the major seven on Eb. A brief cycle of fourths pattern (VII – III – VI) is followed by a chromatic repetition which leads back to the first 8 bars.
