Eric Dolphy recorded ‘Potsa Lotsa’ live with a group of like minded musicians eager to bend and stretch but never really break away from the jazz of the day – Eric Dolphy saxophone, Booker Little trumpet, Mal Waldron piano, Richard Davis bass and Ed Blackwell drums.
Lots to look at here! The piece is pretty much in ‘F’. The F# intro is a tritone substitution of C (so a nice variation on the V-I cadence). Bars 5-8 get lots of heat from the #11 chords. The melody runs up a whole-note scale in bar 5 ending the phrase on the #11. Bar 7 repeats the scale ending on a b13. Bars 8-10 move chromatically to a temporary V-I. A chromatic move to V of F to II and back to the tritone sub.
Nothing really revolutionary but a great integration of many of the hot tricks of “Advanced Forms” (Link).
