Eric Dolphy - 1961

Eric Dolphy recorded ‘Potsa Lotsa’ live with a group of like minded musicians eager to bend and stretch but never really break away from the jazz of the day – Eric Dolphy saxophone, Booker Little trumpet, Mal Waldron piano, Richard Davis bass and Ed Blackwell drums.

Potsa Lotsa

Lots to look at here!
The piece is pretty much in ‘F’. The F# intro is a tritone substitution of C (so a nice variation on the V-I cadence). Bars 5-8 get lots of heat from the #11 chords. The melody runs up a whole-note scale in bar 5 ending the phrase on the #11. Bar 7 repeats the scale ending on a b13. Bars 8-10 move chromatically to a temporary V-I. A chromatic move to V of F to II and back to the tritone sub.

Nothing really revolutionary but a great integration of many of the hot tricks of “Advanced Forms” (Link).
